GBM Pastoral School Curriculum
Welcome to the GBM Pastoral School which at this point in time is on the brink of being launched. By the time you read this it may have been launched already.
I would like to go very quickly through how the School will be run and some of the curriculum that we have in place. This curriculum is likely to change as God gives us new revelation.
Who it is For
Firstly, who is the School for? If you feel that you are called to the ministry, this School is probably the best place for you to start, even if you feel that God has called you to something higher.
If you are not sure of your calling, then this course will put you on the right path. So no matter what your calling or even if you are aspiring to higher office, I believe you should take this course as a foundation.
The Pastoral School
We are looking initially at a two year curriculum, but the second year may branch out, as people may want to specialize in more of a teaching emphasis. Some may want an evangelistic emphasis or more of a pastoral emphasis.
So for now, we have simply laid out all the subjects that we have. We are going to launch this and do the first year where everybody will do the same thing, but by the second year we will be able to decide more.
You might now be asking,
“Is it still valid for me to be a pastor, because after all I have been in the Prophetic School and I know that God has called me to be a prophet?”
Or you might say,
“I am in the Apostolic School and I know God has called me to be an apostle, so why should I study to become a pastor?”
Well let me ask you a simple question. Would you like to be in charge of your own church or ministry?
If you are doing Prophetic Ministry, you are not going to be in charge of your own church, because you are not called to that. You are going to be working under somebody else’s ministry.
If you are in Prophetic Office, you are going to be ministering to the church universal which means many different churches. So you will never be able to say,
“This is my church and I am the leader here.”
If you are an apostle the same thing applies. An apostle cannot be contained to one church, but he or she functions in many different churches. As an apostle, you may establish a church, then put somebody else in charge and move off.
So what really are you aspiring to do now? At this point in time, would you like to start your own church and run your own church or ministry? If so I would suggest you start as a pastor first, until the Lord leads you further into any of the other ministries.
How the School Works
This is how the School will work. Lectures are given one Saturday a month, on the second Saturday of each month.
Lectures start hopefully by 10:00 a.m. if everyone is here. You can come and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, and a muffin, biscuits or something if you didn’t have breakfast.
We will have a time of worship to prepare spiritually before the class starts, then the first lecture session will take you through to lunch time. During the lunch break we will provide you with a delicious meal which you can enjoy, then we will have an afternoon session.
During the class sessions you will be given projects to do. You will also be given homework assignments to do. Sometimes we will be able to do it in the class if there is time. A lot of the time though you may have to go home and do it.
In the next session you may be asked to present your project in one of the class sessions if there is time. Otherwise you can submit your projects to us via the Internet.
The first year Bachelor’s Course should take up to 12 months. At the end of the year there will be a graduation ceremony, and you will graduate with a Bachelor of Pastoral Ministry. The second year you will graduate with a Master of Pastoral Ministry.
First Year Curriculum
I am going to go very quickly through the curriculum I have laid in place for now, to give you an idea of the kind of subjects you will cover.
Slide: Pastoral School
In the first year, these are the subjects we will cover.
1. Foundations of Ministry
2. Practical Ministry
3. Basic Doctrine
4. How to Study the Bible
5. Evangelistic Ministry
6. Pastoral Psychology
7. The Pastoral Calling
Let me give you now a quick breakdown of what we will cover in those courses.
Slide: Foundations of Ministry
In the Foundations of Ministry, you will be taught firstly how to understand the call of God. You will identify what your calling is and if you are called at all.
So we need to first establish your calling and we will be helping you to do that. We will then also be identifying the gifts you have or don’t have, and where you should be going to try and prepare for this ministry.
You will be given an understanding of the church of God, and especially what the church will look like in the future.
Next you will be taught how to prepare sermons and how to preach. After all if you are going to be in ministry, you are going to be standing behind the pulpit and preaching.
The Word of God has suffered through the years through bad preaching, by people who were not taught correctly how to preach well. We are going to teach you how to preach well. We are going to take all the mystery out of preaching, show you how to prepare good sermons and to preach them effectively.
And for those of you who have more of a teaching orientation, we will also then teach you how to function as a teacher and to teach the Word of God.
You will be taught how the anointing of God works, because without the anointing you can’t do any of these things.
You will also learn why the Word of God must be central and why we use the Bible. You will learn a little about the Canon of Scripture, and why the Bible is the Word of God. All these are essential foundational truths which you will need to function as a pastor.
The second course is going to be more practical. In this course we are going to teach you firstly how to counsel people.
Counseling is a subject that a lot of people are confused on. There are a lot of wrong counseling methods out there, and we are going to teach you how to counsel Scripturally and God’s way.
We are going to teach you how to start small group fellowships, like a home fellowship and how a home fellowship should be run. So if you don’t already have a church, a home fellowship is a good place to start. We’ll show you how to go about setting up a home fellowship and how it should be run.
Next we will show you how to move into public ministry God’s way. You will learn how to do it according to the new pattern, not according to the way it has always been done in the past.
We will also show you how to use something that the early church didn’t have – the Internet. If only Paul had the Internet he could have done so much more.
We have accomplished so much using the Internet. God placed us in the back end of nowhere in Mexico, but we rose up and became known internationally, just through the Internet. So we will show you how to put your ministry on the Internet and how to use it effectively.
Then closely allied with that is this wonderful thing called email, where we can send mail without having to put stamps on and put it in a postbox. The younger generation don’t even know what that is anymore.
If you speak to a younger person about snail mail, to them is just basically email that you put into an envelope. They still think in terms of email, because email has become the way to do it.
If you cannot use email and don’t know how to send things out to people using that medium, you will never grow your ministry in this day and age.
And then we will show you how to mobilize all the people you are working with for ministry, to help them identify where they fit and to set up a local church.
These are all practical things that we will cover. We may even add to that in time as more needs come.
Next, you need to know some basic doctrine. We are not going to give you a big theological course that goes into all sorts of complexities.
We are going to teach you some essential doctrines, like the Doctrine of Man. You will learn what we need to know about us, how God made us and how we function.
We are going to look at the Doctrine of God. We need to understand God. And we need to understand some of the doctrines like the Doctrine of the Trinity which is very confusing. You are going to be taught these in a way you have never learned them before.
So I don’t care if you have been on Theological Courses before and have studied these things. I’ll guarantee once you have been through our doctrinal course, you will see things in a very different way.
Then, as many folks have already done in the past, you will probably say,
“Now I understand that doctrine fully for the first time.”
We are going to also be looking at the Doctrine of Christ. You will learn what Jesus did on the cross of Calvary, and what He continues to do in this day and age.
We are going to look at the Doctrine of Salvation and the new birth. We are going to look at stages that we go through like overcoming sin. And we are going to look at the World System and look at everything that is involved in salvation.
Then we are going to look at the Doctrine of Prayer. We are going to consider how prayer is a conversation with God. We are also going to look at different kinds of prayer, learn how to pray for others, and find out where fasting fits when it comes to prayer. That is all covered under basic doctrine.
How to Study the Bible
The next subject is a very exciting one which I think everyone is going to enjoy. It is the subject of how to study the Bible.
We all know we are supposed to read the Word, and so we open it at random. Or maybe you have one of these daily reading schedules that gets you through the whole Bible, but nobody really knows how to study the Bible.
People buy Bible Commentaries to try and understand Scriptures and look them up in the commentaries. There are so many theological books and things out there, and really it can be quite overwhelming.
We are going to teach you how to sit with your Bible and pen and paper if you are still one of the old fashioned types who likes to write by hand. Or you can sit with your computer, mobile phone or whatever you like to type on, and we will teach you how to study the Bible for yourself.
Instead of reading other peoples’ commentaries, we are going to teach you how to make your own commentaries.
What is Included
We are going to start by giving you a breakdown of what the Bible looks like from start to finish. We will give you a chart that will put it all in place and gives you a total context of where everything sits.
In most Theological Colleges they have what they call Bible Survey, where they give you long detailed complicated stuff. You do a survey of the book of (book name). Then they show you who wrote the book and when he wrote it, etc.
It is kind of like studying geography and history. There are a whole lot of boring facts that you have to sit and learn.
Don’t worry, you won’t be doing that in this course. There will be no Bible surveys and no stuff that you have to learn. We are just going to teach you how to take the Bible, read it, study it and get everything out of it.
We are going to teach you how to take one book of the Bible and do a complete study on it all by yourself. You won’t have to look at any commentaries or at what anybody else has to say.
Then we are going to take it down further. You are going to take one chapter of a book and do a detailed study, just on one chapter of the Bible.
After this we are going to break it down even further. We are going to show you how to take just one little verse or paragraph from that chapter and do a complete study on it.
We will then go even lower than that. We are going to teach you how to go into the actual words that are written in a verse of Scripture. We will show you how to go into some of the original languages and things like that.
We are not going to teach you Hebrew and Greek. There are some very good tools available like the Strongs Concordance. We will show you how to use it. We will give you the tools that you need.
Finally we will teach you how to study a specific topic in the Bible. The Bible is like a forest with all sorts of trees scattered everywhere.
If you want to study just one kind of tree in a forest, you are going to have to go on a trek. You will have to walk and walk until you find another one of the same kind of tree.
The Bible is kind of like that. It has little bits of teaching scattered everywhere on one subject. We will teach you how to accumulate all the trees together in one place, and to find all the Scriptures that relate to one topic, so that you can build your own topical study.
There are books out there called Topical Bibles. You have Nave’s Topical Bible which is one of the most famous ones. In this book you can look up a subject and it will give you all the Scriptures on that subject.
Well that is the way he saw it. But there is nothing more exciting than personal discovery in the Scriptures. We are going to teach you how to so enjoy the Bible, that you won’t want to sit down and read all of the other books. You will just want to study the Bible for yourself.
It gets so exciting when you see things for yourself. And then, when you stand up to preach, you are not going to be giving people canned food and regurgitating what you learned from other preachers.
You won’t have to quote other preachers. You will be able to just speak what God showed you in the Word. That is going to be one of our exciting subjects.
We are going to learn about Evangelistic Ministry, because without evangelism and winning the lost, the church cannot be built. So even if you are going to be functioning as a pastor, you need to know how to bring the lost in.
We are going to be looking at what the Great Commission is about. We will look at how to present the gospel in a simple way. And when we are going to show how to work with a person once you have led them to the Lord.
A lot of people out there lead someone to the Lord somewhere and then just leave them hanging. It’s like birthing a baby, then just throwing it on the ground to take care of itself.
We need to know how to follow up new converts. We need to introduce them to the Kingdom of God, to the whole new realm that we have, and we need to answer any questions. All of that is going to be covered in our evangelistic course.
The next subject we will cover is Pastoral Psychology. You might think to yourself,</p>
<p>“Ooh psychology. That is one of those heavy subjects with lots of heavy, intellectual stuff.”</p>
<p>Well you won’t need that because we are going to teach you very simple psychology. We are going to teach you how God made us, and the difference between humans and animals.</p>
<p>We will teach you the temperaments of the soul which makes each of us function differently. We are then going to teach you how to use those temperaments in ministry and show you how to counsel people in the different temperaments.</p>
<p>We will show you how to identify peoples’ ministry interests, based on their temperaments. We are also going to show you how temperaments affect relationships.</p>
<p>You see you are going to be working with a lot of people who need to relate to each other. You need to help them to connect and relate to each other, and a knowledge of temperaments is going to help that.</p>
<p>Next we are going to show you the difference between templates and habits. What is a template? You will learn what it is. A template is something that we all have which comes as a result of the experiences of life.</p>
<p>You will learn that we all form habits through doing things over and over again. If you are going to be counseling people and helping them, you need to understand how templates are formed and how habits are formed, and you need to understand how to help people to overcome their problems.</p>
<p>All of this then is going to be a precursor to being able to counsel people, which is one of the main functions of the pastor. We will not be giving you a detailed study on counseling in the first year. That will come in the second year. We will however show you how to get counseling people very simply.</p>
<p><img src=” https:=”” www.pastoralschool.co.za=”” images=”” pastoral_calling.png”=””>
The last subject we have is the full Pastoral Calling. In this subject we are going to look at the Fivefold Pastor. We are going to look at the pastoral purpose and what the pastor is meant to accomplish.
We are going to look at the functions of a pastor. Then we will look at Moses who was originally the prototype of the pastor.
We are going to be looking at how a pastor is prepared and how he is trained. And we will look at pastoral leadership and how a pastor should lead.
Of course at this point we have the Moses model. I am expecting that by the time we get there we will probably have a David model thrown in there as well. So we have a bit time to get that together before we get to it. That is why I have this as the last subject.
That is will bring us to the end of the first year or Bachelor’s Course. By then you should be fully flowing and functioning quite effectively as a pastor.
The second year and from thereon we have a whole lot of subjects available. You won’t necessarily do all of these. It will depend on where you begin to move after your pastoral calling is confirmed, whether you have a teaching orientation, etc.
We are going to be looking at Pastoral Counseling in some detail. We are going to start by looking at Counseling God’s Way. We are going to look at what counseling is and how to counsel God’s way, not the world’s way.
We are going to be looking at very practical ways of counseling. We will also look at what kind of person you need to be, in order to be God’s kind of counselor.
We are going to be looking at the excuses people make when you try to counsel them in a subject called Please Excuse Me. When you come to counsel people, they will try to justify themselves and excuse their behavior. We will teach you how to deal with that.
Next we will be looking at solving some specific counseling problems. We are going to look at what causes problems in our lives and how we should go about solving those problems.
We are going to look at problems like hurts, anger and bitterness. We are also going to deal with fear, depression, as well as guilt and condemnation. Then we are going to deal with a very common problem called insecurity or inferiority.
We will teach you how to counsel people who have all of these problems in their lives, and show you how to solve them.
After this we are going to look at the Teaching Calling. Because you see it is very likely that you are not going to stay just as a pastor, but you will probably want to flow as a teacher, and move into the pastor/teacher calling.
We are going to look at the teaching calling in some detail. We will look at the signs of the teaching calling and see what the fivefold teacher looks like.
We are going to look at the teaching purpose and the kind of anointing the teacher has. We are going to see how God prepares the teachers, as well as look at the functions of a teacher. And finally we will look at what it means to rise up perhaps later into full Teaching Office.
Transformation and Change
The next subject is a very important one. I have called it Transformation and Change.
You see it is not enough just to talk about problems. We need to come to solutions, and we need some things that are more than just principles, in order to break free of the problems that we have.
So in Spiritual Transformation we are going to look at the principles. Then we are going to look at the importance of bringing the presence of God into our problems. We will then look at the importance of the power of God to help us overcome our problems.
We are going to be looking at the Lord’s presence in our past as we get to dealing with past experiences. We are going to look at a subject called Spiritual Re-parenting. We will look at how to break bad habits, and then we will look at how to be aware of or practice the presence of the Lord all the time.
In Transform your life, we are going to look at how we have been programmed through your life, almost like a computer. We are going to look at a kind of DNA that we have never learned about.
We all know that DNA are the qualities that we pick up from our parents and ancestors. But there is also a spiritual and a psychological DNA which is far more than a physical one and you will learn about it.
You will learn about templates which I mentioned earlier. You will also learn about archetypes. You might be wondering,
“What is that?”
You will find out. You will learn about paradigms which you also might be wondering what it is. Again, you will find out when we do the course.
We are going to look at the keys to change, how change takes place, and the process of bringing change in our lives. All of this is going to help you to help other people deal with their problems.
Whether their problems come from past experiences or current situations, from habits in their lives or whatever it is, you are going to be fully qualified to counsel and help people to break free.
Instead of sending them to some psychiatrist or psychologist to use the principles of the world, you will be able to do it using the Spirit and the Word.
Next we are going to teach you how to overcome evil. It is inevitable that sooner or later you are going to come into confrontation with demon powers.
So in this part of the course we are going to teach you to understand angels and demons. We are going to teach you how to do spiritual warfare, and how to bring deliverance of demonic bondage to people.
We will show you how to deal with curses and how to discern the presence of spirits and demon powers. We are also going to teach you how to overcome sickness and disease, how to overcome poverty, and how to overcome separation and loneliness.
You need to help people who are lonely and who have had bad experiences in relationships. You will learn how to counsel them and teach them to overcome these problems.
Bringing God’s Power
We can’t do any of these things without God’s power. We need the anointing of God’s power to enable us.
And so we have a whole course on bringing God’s power and how we must make ourselves available to the Lord, for Him to sit upon our hearts as a throne. We are going to teach you about the different kinds of anointing.
We will show you how to receive the power of God and how to increase it. And we are going to show you how to manifest that power in the Fivefold Ministry.
Living in Blessing
Then we have a fairly large course called Living in Blessing. In this course we are going to kind of bring together the whole spiritual life.
We are going to show you God’s plan for abundance. We will teach you to understand sin, salvation and the flesh, and what it means to live by the Spirit.
We are going to show you how to identify and address root problems; things like bitterness, sexual lusts and the desire for things, selfishness, etc.
We are going to show you how to overcome the problems in life using the forces of the Spirit within. We are going to teach you how to use faith, hope and love to overcome. And then we will also show you how to charge up those forces that God has placed in your spirit and release them out to bring change.
We are going to show you how to deal with your enemies, and one of the main enemies we have is the World System. You need to understand the world, the church and the differences.
You need to know how to overcome in the world and how to overcome demon powers. You also need to understand the Holy Spirit and how He works so we can overcome spiritually.
Finally, we need to learn how to live an abundant life of wealth, health and social relationships. We need to know how to deal with all the problems and eventually live the kind of life that God intends for us.
One final subject for those who are more advanced in the teaching, is how to move from being a sinner who doesn’t know the Lord. You go through life becoming aware of your sinfulness, and are gradually being transformed until you become like Jesus.
It’s like a journey. You start out the journey and there are many things that happen along the way. Then there is the final destination.
The starting point on the journey is us being lost and sinners without Christ. The ending part of the journey is us becoming like Jesus; perfect and totally sinless.
However in between there is a journey and there is a struggle. We struggle with sin and with problems. I will be teaching you in the Spiritual Journey how to look at the tenses of salvation, because salvation is a past, a present and a future.
You are going to learn the power of law, the principles of the Word, and the power of the Spirit. You will also learn how to deal with inner conflicts. You will learn how to carry out spiritual exercise, and you will learn how to climb that final mountain which will bring you to a place of victory.
Wrapping it Up
As you can see, the entire course so far is 100 percent practical. This is because we are working with people and we are not going to stand up and teach a load of theory. Even the doctrines that we teach, you will find that they absolutely practical.
Perhaps you have the idea that you can become a minister, stand up behind the pulpit and spout a whole lot of head knowledge like a lot of people you have seen out there. If that is what you are aiming for, please do not join our School because we won’t make you into one of those.
However, perhaps you have within you a burning passion to work for the Lord and to dedicate your life fully to Him. You want to help people out there to overcome, to be able to teach and minister under the anointing of God. If so, then you are a good candidate for our Pastoral School.
I suggest you pray about it. Go ahead, fill in an application and join us, and get started on this new journey towards becoming God’s kind of leader.
